Does my ceiling contain asbestos?
If the property was built before the late 1990s, there is a reasonable chance it does. Bonded cement sheet ceilings, often with timber or cement cover strips over the joins, were standard in Australian homes for decades. Age and appearance are only indicators. A sample tested at a NATA accredited laboratory is the only way to confirm it, and until then the ceiling should not be drilled, cut or broken.

Is a ceiling harder to remove than a wall?
It is a different job. Everything comes down towards the crew and the floor, so containment, protection and clean down take up more of the work than they do on a wall, and access equipment is needed in the room. It is one of the reasons ceilings are poor candidates for do it yourself removal even when the area looks small.
What if there is loose insulation above the ceiling?
That is a separate and more serious material. Loose fibre insulation in a roof cavity is friable asbestos and it sits under a different licence class, so it is assessed and quoted as friable asbestos removal rather than as a ceiling job. We identify it during the cavity assessment, before any sheeting is disturbed.
Do I need testing before you quote?
Not always. If the material is unconfirmed we arrange sampling through a NATA accredited laboratory and quote against the result, which is the approach we recommend. If you already hold a laboratory report or an asbestos register entry for the ceiling, we can quote from that.
Can I take down a small asbestos ceiling myself?
In NSW you may remove up to 10 square metres of bonded asbestos without a licence, but you still have to follow SafeWork NSW handling rules, use the correct PPE and dispose of the waste at a licensed facility. Overhead work in an enclosed room is the hardest way to stay inside those rules, and most ceilings exceed the area limit in a single room.
Can you put the ceiling back afterwards?
